A Spanish red grape variety that is known as Mourvèdre in France. It prefers warm sunny aspects but needs good water supply to ensure the fruit is good. Can give wines of 15% which can be high in tannins but has lovely blueberry, blackberry and plum flavours. The Finca Bacara wines are excellent examples of Monastrell from Jumilla.
